NYC Subway Art: 81 Street - Museum of Natural History
The art in the 81st Street and Central Park West station portrays the range and diversity of the Museum of Natural History. Items include glass and ceramic mosaics, handmade ceramic tiles, hand-cast glass, bronze and cut granite floor tiles.
The station is a fun extension of the Museum of Natural History. The artwork is scattered throughout the station and it even continues beyond the turnstiles with beautiful butterflies and other interesting creatures.
The tiles are extremely colorful and they create a wonderful transition into the museum of Natural History. The gray colored tiles represent species that are extinct. The colored tiles represent species that still exist.
Take the time to wander all of the levels of this station in order to get a complete view of the artwork. It is a great place for kids to explore on the way to the museum.
