NYC Subway Art: 23rd Street

Memories of Twenty Third Street, 2002
Keith Godard

These entertaining mosaics represent the neighborhood through various hats that may have been worn in 1880-1920 when 23rd street was a major entertainment and cultural district.

The hats are placed high on the wall, so when you view them from across the platform, it looks like passengers waiting for the subway are wearing the hats.

Some of the names listed below the hats include Mark Twain, John Barrymore, Lillian Russell, Grace La Rue, Evelyn Nesbit, Jim Brady, Fay Templeton, Maud Nathan, Clement C. Moore, Mary Pickford and Eleanor Roosevelt.
