Trinity Root

On September 11, 2001, the debris from the World Trade Center Towers knocked over a giant sycamore tree that had stood in the courtyard for nearly a century in the churchyard of St. Paul’s Chapel (Broadway and Fulton).

When the dust settled the tree was found lying on a narrow path in the yard. It had fallen in such a way that none of the tombstones had been disturbed.

Artist, Steve Tobin heard about the tree and decided to use the roots as a metaphor for unity and strength after 9/11. He created this 12 ½ foot x 20 foot sculpture that now resides at Trinity Church.
