City Hall Park
Horace Greeley (1811-1872)
Located in City Hall Park
Downtown New York City
Horace Greeley was the founder of the New York Tribune. The headquarters were opposite City Hall on Park Row. He was nominated for the presidency in 1872, but lost the election and died several weeks later. His body lay in state atop the rotunda staircase in City Hall.
Horace Greeley’s co-workers at the New York Tribune commissioned this statue by John Quincy Adams Ward.
The plaque at the base of the statue reads: "Near this spot stood the New York World Building whose publisher Joseph Pulitzer upheld the highest traditions of American Journalism.”
