Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends

Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends comes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from the National Portrait Gallery, London and is on exhibit until October 4, 2015

The Met presents an expanded version of the show, including twenty additional portraits (for a total of ninety-two works of art). They have enlarged the section representing Sargent's efforts in the United States. They also decided to include a selection of twenty-one watercolors and drawings from the Met's collection.

The individuals in the paintings represent a range of leading figures in the creative arts such as artists Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin and writers Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry James.

During the greater part of Sargent's career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolours, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings.

After 1907 Sargent focused on landscapes.  He also sculpted later in life. (1856-1925)
