NYC Subway Art: Houston Street

Platform Diving, 1994
Deborah Brown

Seven glass mosaics at the Houston Street Station depict underwater creatures waiting for the train.

Brown explores the analogy between subway travel and the movement of aquatic creatures through their natural environment.

She explains, “underwater creatures navigate a complex spatial array of undersea passageways, much as we maneuver through our own manmade systems.” She wanted to portray them in activities familiar to us in our world.
